この間パーティーで話していて「見た目は出世にどれくらい役立つか」という話題になった。結論から言うと「結構役に立つ」。特に男性では背が高いことが有利じゃないか、という雑談に。ここで背が高いとは、１８５センチ超の見るからに大きい人のこと。会った瞬間に「縮尺が違う」と思わせるタイプ。
私のビジネススクールの同級生でも身長２メーター近くて（もしかしたらもっとあるのかもしれない）、世の中を３分割したらトップ３分の１に入るであろう顔かたちのAshleyは確かにめきめき出世してSiebelのVPになった。同級生で唯一起業した会社をIPOまで持っていったZiaはPeople誌の「アメリカで最も素敵な独身男性」の一人に選ばれた。そもそも、ビジネススクールに来てるアメリカ人って、見た目のいい人が多いのだが・・・。それ以外でも「アメリカの男子では、１０代半ばでの身長と、大人になってからの収入には相関関係がある(１０代の頃背が高い方が、大人になってから収入が高い）」という調査結果を見たこともある。この原因として、
１）そもそも、頭のいい人・経済的に成功している人はルックスのよい伴侶を選ぶので、才色兼備な子供が生まれる確率が高い
というpolitically incorrectな説を唱える人が時々いるのだが(特に日本人でこの説を言う人が多い。）、
２）見た目がよいということで子供の頃からなにかにつけて自信があり、より大きなことにチャンレンジして早く成功していくから
という説もある。
Economistの５月２２日号にはThe right to be beautifulとThe Beauty Businessという記事が載っている。化粧から整形手術までのBeauty Businessについてのものだが、有料コンテンツなので、面白いところだけピックアップすると・・・・
１）good-looking women with a flat tyre get rescued first
まぁこれはそうなんだろうなぁ・・・・
２）when Barry Harper of London Guildhall University looked at 11,000 British 33-year-olds, he found that the pay penalty for unattractiveness was around 15% for men and 11% for women.
３３歳のイギリス人１１０００人の調査では、魅力的でない男は魅力的な男より１５％収入が低いのだそうだ。女性では、その数字は１１％ということで男の方が差が大きい。意外だが、これは恐らく男の方がそもそも収入が高いので、差も開きやすいせいではないか。（Economistはそこまで言及していない）
３）A baby of three months will smile longer at a face judged by adults to be “attractive”.
私は赤ちゃんに泣かれることが多いのだが、そこには深い理由があるのだろうか。うーむ。

興味深い話です。
調査の場合、なにか客観的な基準で切らないといけないと思うのですが、どうやって魅力のあるなしを判断しているのでしょうね。

My personal opinion:
Talking about “creaters” here.
Handsome architects attract more clients because clients are looking for “handsome” buildings and they overlaps the image of their future building to the architects face.
Then here is a paradox. If you are a handome architect, you will spend more time playing with girls, being invited to parties or lectures etc. You spend more time on socializing with others. So you don’t spend a lot of time on “design.” However if you are an ugly architect, you lock yourself inside your room and work on design regardless of night and day. In addition, since you don’t have a lot of clients, you will have less projects, which can make you allocate more of your efforts into each project. This will definately improve the quality of your design. As a result, ugly architects design better than handsome ones. Ugly architects may start slow but in a long run, they will catch up and become even better architects.
Of course there are exceptions but if you look at those Big names, they are almost all “ugly” architects.
I believe I can say the same thing to musicians/artist. Check out Mick Jagger, Elton John, Billy Joel, John Lennon, Johnny Rotten, Tatsuro Yamashita, Keisuke Kuwata – those “ledends” are not that handsome, are they? I also noticed that you find a lot of shorter people in those rock and roll legends.
Painters? Oh, look at them….Andy Warhol, Picasso, Dali, etc etc.

I don’t think it’s a paradox, Mozan. Succeeding in business and making a good design are two different things, and in practice there may be a negative correlation because of the reason you pointed out.

In some fields, a maker can succeed financially solely on the reputation of his/her work. In general, however, the ideal situation is to form a company with both type of people—a businessman and a maker.

Shiro, I understand what you want say but I am afraid to say that you are losing a point of discussion. I also did not find anything new from the article you posted – it is a very boring article and I had to stop reading in the middle. No offence here, my view is quite simple, see below.
Here’s my summary: I would say in general, ugly people are more hungry for fame, reputation or success because of a strong sense of inferiority they have on their appearance. It’s a psychological adverse effect to pursue recognition from others.
You cannot label ugly people as nerds. Being a nerd is just a life style – it’s personal preference and it has almost nothing to do with your appearance.
In addition, architect, musicians or painters still have to make their living by making money – they are artist but they are business professionals as well. Successful architects mean they can design and “sell” good buildings. If your design sucks, you cannot sell your design in a long run – remember, this is the bottom line. In other words, succeeding in business as an architect must require a skill to design good buildings. You cannot separate business and design, ever. (I have seen some young architects with poor design skill who got lucky and became famous for a short period of time though.)
Accordingly, those “ugly” architects put a lot of effort on not only studying good design but also selling their buildings. Ugly people can be successful business people, as well.

前提条件は
１）ルックスがいいともてる
２）もてると遊ぶ
３）仕事の質は量に比例する
でしょうか。とすると、それぞれの項目について反論できそうですね。特に１）は男性の場合20歳ちょっと過ぎて以降はあんまり当てはまらないのでは？？
ちなみに、私の周りには「お金持ちの家に生まれたぼんぼん（またはお嬢様）でありながら、仕事に激しく熱心でかつ成功している」という例が複数あります。これには、例えば次のような理由がありえるとは思います。
１）「親の七光りではない」「親よりも自分が優れている」ということを証明したいという欲求が強い
２）帝王学の賜物
３）生活の心配がないがゆえに仕事でリスクがとれる
・・いずれにしても「見た目がいいからもてるから遊んじゃうから仕事ができない」というのと同じように「お金持ちだから仕事する必要ないからいいかげん」という偏見が一般的にはあるように思いますが、実際には決してそうでない人をたくさん見てきました。その中には「お金もちでしかも相当good looking」という人も多数。
もちろん、マクロ的平均値は、あくまで平均の話であって、その平均とは相容れないミクロのケースが存在することを否定するものではなく、その逆も真実。私の周りに否定的ケースが複数あるからといっても正しい反論にはなりませんが。
しかし、見た目がいいくらいで世の中渡れたら苦労ないなぁ。みんな整形してHappily Ever Afterになれますよね。

なるほど、あなたのポイントは理解しました。劣等感が努力への動機となる可能性については同意します。一方で、Chikaさんが挙げている2番目の理由もそれなりに説得力があります。ミクロに見ればどちらのケースもあるのでしょう。
私は「良いデザイン」と「ビジネス的成功」にはあまり関係がないと思っているのであのように書いたのですが、オフトピックでしたね。
