昨日のエントリーでLinkedInの話をしたが、偶然にも今日のSan Jose Mercury Newsのビジネス欄一面はLinkedInのパテントの話。Social networking a tech battleground

「知り合いの知り合いは知り合い」という「知り合いネットワーク」をシステムで管理・推進しよう、というウェットなんだかドライなんだかよくわからないsocial networkingが最近バブル的話題を呼んでいる。その最初の先駆者Six Degreesは早々につぶれてしまったのだが、ここが持っていたキーパテントが競売にかかったところで、Yahooを含む20社がビッド、LinkedInと、同業他社のTribeがコストを折半して70万ドルで落札した、というのが記事の内容。

問題のパテントはNo.6175831、ということで、US Patent and Trademark Officeのデータベースをちらっと検索するとこんな内容。

概要はこんな感じ。

A networking database containing a plurality of records for different individuals in which individuals are connected to one another in the database by defined relationships. Each individual has the opportunity to define the relationship which may be confirmed or denied. E-mail messaging and interactive communication between individuals and a database service provider provide a method of constructing the database. The method includes having a registered individual identify further individuals and define therewith a relationship. The further individuals then, in turn, establish their own defined relationships with still other individuals. The defined relationships are mutually defined.

これでは、殆どのsocial networkingサービスが含まれてしまいます。

ということで、冒頭の記事には、LinkedInの競合のVisible PathのCEOのコメントが載っていて
「If the patent is enforced, Hoffman and ally Mark Pincus are going to be richer than Bill Gates in a couple of years」
HoffmanはLinkedInのCEO, Mark PincusはTribeのCEO。このパテントが適用されれば、どちらも数年でBill Gatesより金持ちになるぞ、と。

ちょっと待て、どうどう。Bill Gatesだって、ここまで金持ちになるのに何十年もかかったわけで。まだビジネスモデルも確立していないsocial networkingで、数年のうちにBill Gatesを越す、とはこれはまた大げさな表現。でも、この大風呂敷発言からは、「業界がバブルしてる」感じが伝わってくるかと。
